1983 Ranger Guide Certificates and Qualifications – Canoeist Permit – Elementary

  1. a) Understand the procedure to prevent accidents and the standard of efficiency and courtesy expected of members of the Association when afloat.

b) Know the Safety Rules of the Association which apply when boating.

2) a) Show how to launch and lift out a canoe, with assistance if necessary.

b) Enter and leave a canoe unaided:

(i) alongside a bank

(ii) in water about knee-deep

(iii) from a landing-stage or other craft in deep water.

3) Manage a canoe single-handed and demonstrate the following:

(i) getting under way

(ii) turning 360 degrees to port and to starboard

(iii) emergency stop

(iv) the draw stroke

(v) using the paddle as a stabiliser

(vi) bringing the canoe alongside

4) Show a knowledge of the care and maintenance of the craft.

5) Show the uses of whipping and use the following knots: reef, bowline, clove hitch, fisherman’s (anchor) bend, sheetbend, round turn and two half hitches.

6) Show an elementary knowledge of the effects of currents (tidal or river) on the craft.

7) Capsize a canoe, bringing ashore with paddle and empty it, with assistance if necessary.

8) Demonstrate:

a) how to pack a canoe for a day’s journey

b) how to port the canoe at locks.

9) Demonstrate expired air resuscitation using a manikin or mask; place a patient in the recovery position.

Alternative

The holder of a BCU Two Star Certificate may, as the discretion of her District Commissioner and Asst. Adviser (Boating), be issued with a Canoeist Permit-Elementary.
